Healing with Internal Kung Fu.

The following was written by one of my students and I thought it was a nice testimonial for those looking to improve their health and mobility in a safe way.

"About twenty five years ago, I started to get problems with my shoulders which got worse and worse until, in 1996, they froze. I couldn’t get my hands above the bottom of my chest, which made things like putting on a tie comical to the viewer and very, very painful for me. After a year of physiotherapy, I got enough movement back to get by but any sudden shock would make me cry with the pain. Surgery was available but the outcome was uncertain, and had the possibility of making things worse.

In November of 2011, I started to think, “If it’s this bad now, what will it be like when I’m older?”  The prospect of a crippled, painful old age was not attractive so I went back to the doctor, who arranged for more physiotherapy. I went to the (very painful) sessions and did the exercises, but there was little change. If anything, my shoulders were more painful.

I had always been interested in the martial arts and fascinated by the idea of Bagua. Although I had read that it was only suitable for the young beginner (and I was anything but that) with good flexibility (by this stage, I was only able to touch the top of my knees!), I thought, “Why not?” And then one of those serendipitous things happened. In January 2012, thinking I would have to travel from Bristol to London to find a club, I stumbled on Oliver Smith’s Internal Kung Fu website which said a Bristol class would be opening.

I started training at the Bath classes. I won’t pretend it was easy. It was demanding and often painful but I found my shoulders responding in a way that they weren’t to the physiotherapy. Within six months, it had reversed the problem significantly. Eighteen months later, my shoulders work again and mostly without pain. My inflexibility has been reversed by thirty-odd years. Oh yes, and the problems I used to get with my knees have gone.

To me, Internal Kung Fu has been little short of a miracle."

It pleases me that I have managed to help my student and friend to such a degree.
